Australian Meat Pie Recipe 🥧

This classic Australian meat pie is a favorite across the country, known for its flaky pastry and rich, savory filling. Perfect for a quick snack or a hearty meal!

Ingredients (Makes 4 individual pies)

For the filling:
  • 500g (1 lb) ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp flour
  • 250ml (1 cup) beef broth
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato sauce (ketchup)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional)
  • Salt & pepper to taste
For the pastry:
  • 2 sheets of puff pastry
  • 1 egg yolk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the filling:

    • Heat the olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sauté until soft.
    • Add the ground beef and cook until browned.
    • Sprinkle in the flour, stir well to combine, and cook for another minute.
    • Pour in the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, tomato paste, and soy sauce.
    • Season with salt and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 15-20 minutes until thick. Set aside to cool.
  2. Assemble the pies:

    • Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F).
    • Cut circles of puff pastry to fit into small pie tins or muffin trays. Press them gently into the molds.
    • Fill each pastry shell with the meat filling.
    • Cut additional pastry circles for the lids, place them on top, and seal the edges by pressing with a fork.
    • Brush the tops with egg yolk for a golden finish.
  3. Bake the pies:

    • Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  4. Serve & enjoy!

    • Let the pies cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with a side of ketchup or gravy!
